On June 19th, Beijing time, the Buss family is preparing to reach an agreement with Mark Walter, CEO and Chairman of TWG Global, to sell a majority of their stake in the Lakers, with the transaction estimated at around $10 billion. Lakers player Doncic updated his social media to welcome the new owner, saying, “The Lakers are a remarkable team. I look forward to meeting Mark Walter and have high hopes for what lies ahead. I also want to express my gratitude to Jeanie and the Buss family for their warm welcome. I’m thrilled that Jeanie will continue to be involved in team matters. I can't wait to work with them to win a championship!”
Previously, ESPN reporter Ramona Shelburne reported that when the purchase agreement was signed, Doncic was the only player who received a brief notification, while LeBron James had not been informed by the team. However, Lakers reporter Dave McMenamin stated that the sale of the team would not affect James's future decisions.
McMenamin also mentioned on a TV program, “Sources close to Doncic and James have revealed that both are very excited about this sale, believing it to be significant for the team.” Earlier, a league insider with close ties to the Lakers expressed, "I'm genuinely excited—now the Lakers can finally spend like a top-tier franchise should."
Interestingly, both teams that Doncic has played for in his career have now been sold. Mavericks reporter Kevin Gray Jr noted that in the past 20 months, the total sale amount for the teams Doncic has played for is nearly $14 billion.
At the end of November 2023, Mark Cuban sold a majority stake in the Mavericks to the Adelson family, with an estimated valuation of around $3.5 billion.
Commenting on the Lakers' sale, noted journalist Windhorst remarked, “I suspect the Lakers are about to undergo a modernization process; if I were other teams, I wouldn’t see this as good news. Theoretically, with more resources being injected, the Lakers as an organization will only become more formidable.”
